Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth (BID Plymouth), long known for its outstanding orthopedic care, logs more than 3,000 surgeries each year. Now, the hospital is proud to be a clinical affiliate of the New England Baptist Orthopedics Program and to have embarked on the construction of a new, state-of-the-art facility for outpatient ambulatory surgery, thoughtfully addressing the needs of its rapidly growing community and aging population.
“Our patients can be assured of Boston-level orthopedic care without the commute to Boston,” says Scott Oliver, MD, Chief of the Center for Hip and Knee Replacement at BID Plymouth and Founder of Plymouth Bay Orthopedic Associates (PBOA), a group of orthopedic surgeons affiliated with BID Plymouth and the New England Baptist Orthopedics Program. “The quality of our orthopedic care is the top in the state, receiving the highest ratings.”
In addition to highly skilled surgeons, the dedicated team includes outstanding physician assistants, nurses, sports medicine doctors, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists, anesthetists, and support staff—more than 100 individuals in total. BID Plymouth and PBOA serve a large and growing population, seeing patients from the entire South Shore and Cape communities, as far west as Providence and east to Provincetown. In addition to both traditional and robotic surgeries, the practice offers a wide range of non-surgical treatment options, all carefully tailored to the individual.
BID Plymouth’s recent affiliation with New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) further enhances these services. Launched in October 2022, collaboration binds two highly respected hospitals within the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) system. “New England Baptist is one of the top orthopedic hospitals in the country,” says Oliver, who served as the NEBH chief resident during his orthopedic training. “It is nationally recognized for its extraordinary patient-centered model of care. Our affiliation emulates this model and recognizes that the orthopedic care at BID Plymouth is equal to the orthopedic quality standards of the Baptist.” Adds Kevin Coughlin, President of BID Plymouth: “This collaboration between BID Plymouth and New England Baptist builds upon our excellent orthopedics program. It will be transformational for our patients in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.”
Improved access to same-day surgeries and urgent orthopedic care is also transforming the patient experience at BID Plymouth. Plans are underway for the construction of the Ambulatory Surgery Center, a joint venture between PBOA and BILH that will provide a spacious freestanding facility for the practice’s outpatient surgeries, including sports medicine procedures, shoulder, hand, foot and ankle surgeries, hip and knee replacements, and select spine surgery. With these new initiatives, BID Plymouth is meeting the changing needs of its community and aging population. “Mobility and good orthopedic health are essential to a person’s overall functioning and quality of life,” says Oliver. “We are deeply committed to continuously developing our orthopedic programs. Vision, leadership, and philanthropic support have been essential to bring this important project to fruition.”
