Investing in Care through Education

In an era of unprecedented change in health care, prioritizing the ongoing education of its dedicated professionals is one of the most meaningful ways BID Needham strengthens the quality of care we provide to our community. Philanthropic support of our Education Grant Program empowers staff to pursue advanced degrees, specialized certifications, and professional training that advance their skills, knowledge, and expertise. By investing in those who care for our patients, this program builds a highly skilled, innovative, and engaged workforce, enabling employees to expand their impact, prepare for future leadership opportunities, and advance excellence in patient care. 

Since the program’s inception in 2023, the hospital has awarded 257 grants totaling $656,000 to 154 employees. $414,000 has been distributed to nurses, who play an integral role in the delivery of compassionate, patient-centered care and are in many ways the backbone of BID Needham. The hospital’s ability to invest in the growth and development of its nursing workforce is significantly enhanced by the generosity of the Flatley Foundation.

Thanks to the foundation’s support, nurses at BID Needham are pursuing advanced academic and leadership opportunities that allow them to develop both personally and professionally. “Without a doubt, I would not be the nurse I am today without the experiences and resources offered to me while working at BID Needham,” says one grant recipient. Adds another, “I am honored to be employed by a hospital that recognizes the contribution and specialized role of nurses and supports our growth for the future of health care.”

Grant recipients have come from 25 departments across the hospital, ranging from inpatient units to the Emergency Department to security. While their educational goals differ, they share a common appreciation for a hospital that believes in the potential of its workforce and the generous donors who invest in their growth.

One nursing student and single mother of three described the grant’s impact as “more than I can put into words.” Balancing work, school, and family responsibilities can make continuing education a challenge, she notes, but the award “genuinely lifts that weight.” She adds, “Knowing that people donated specifically to help staff like me grow professionally makes it feel that much more meaningful.” 

Collectively, investments in education are strengthening BID Needham’s workforce and advancing the quality of care available to our community.
