Philanthropy powers critical care growth
Two generous gifts totaling $2 million from the Copeland Family Foundation are reshaping emergency care at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton, ensuring the hospital can meet growing demand for high-quality, patient-centered care close to home for generations to come.
Announced during BID Milton’s record-breaking Everyday Exceptional Gala at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in April, the foundation’s gifts represent one of the most significant philanthropic investments in the hospital’s history. In recognition of their generosity, the newly expanded Emergency Department (ED) will bear the Copeland Family name—a reflection of their leadership and lasting impact on community health.

More than 400 supporters gathered for the celebration, which raised an additional $700,000 toward the hospital’s Everyday Exceptional campaign. These funds, along with the Copeland Family Foundation’s generosity, come at a defining time for the advancement of emergency care in Milton and the surrounding community.
Over the past decade, demand for services in BID Milton’s ED has sharply risen. Originally designed to accommodate 26,000 visits annually, the department now cares for nearly 42,000 patients each year—a number that continues to rise. Regional hospital closures have only intensified the need for expanded, modernized facilities.
The Copeland Family Foundation’s investment combined with powerful community support enables a comprehensive renovation and expansion that will nearly double ED capacity. The project will increase the number of treatment spaces, enhance patient privacy, and improve the overall care experience—while expanding on-site parking to increase convenience for patients and families.
BID Milton President Rich Fernandez emphasized the importance of philanthropy to meet the moment. “We’re grateful for the Copeland Family Foundation’s leadership in advancing high-quality, patient-centered care,” he said. At the gala, Fernandez also underscored the urgency of the expansion, noting that “the need is real. The need is now—and we are answering that need.”
For frontline caregivers, the impact will be immediate. A larger, thoughtfully designed ED will allow clinical teams to reduce wait times, improve efficiency, and care for more patients in a setting that best reflects the hospital’s commitment to excellence.
The Copeland Family Foundation’s gift builds on the broader success of the Everyday Exceptional campaign, BID Milton’s first capital campaign in more than a decade. Earlier phases delivered sweeping upgrades to inpatient units and created state-of-the-art cardiology and neurology testing suites—investments that have already transformed the patient experience across the campus.
Set to open in summer 2026, the expanded ED marks the campaign’s final phase—and serves as a powerful example of what philanthropy can achieve. For the Copeland Family Foundation, their investment is more than a gift; it is a commitment to the health, resilience, and future of the Milton community.
