Giving to Family

Landmark gift names community medical center

For more than four decades, the Muni family has called Winchester Hospital home—a relationship rooted in hard work and strengthened by a commitment to community. When Gita Muni started working as a medical technologist at the Family Medical Center in 1981, she never imagined that decades later her family would help transform the building.

“We have a humble beginning. We came here for education, worked for many different companies, and eventually founded our own,” says Indu Muni. “During that time, Gita was fortunate enough to work at the Family Medical Center. Once in a while, she used to bring our children Neal and Sheel with her, and for the last 40 years, Winchester has felt like home.”

That sense of community grew stronger when Sheel, a special needs individual, found a place at Winchester Hospital on the Food Services team. “They hired him to work in the cafeteria 22 years ago,” Indu recalls. “Since that day, not only has he had a job, but he makes a meaningful contribution every day.”

Neal Muni, MD, a recently appointed member of Winchester Hospital’s Board of Trustees, reflects on the family’s journey: “Over 40 years, starting with my mom’s experience to me coming on weekends and my brother working here—you really feel like it’s a community; it’s a family. Being able to give back and help advance the hospital’s mission is very special.”

Their most recent gift named the Muni Family Medical Center in Wilmington and supported the expansion and renovation of the space. It’s a tribute to the building that has been a touchstone throughout their lives. “This building itself has a lot of meaning to our family,” says Teena Kohli, MD, Neal’s wife. “We drove by it for years. Neal’s mom worked here. We saw the value of investing in this facility and felt a great sense of gratitude for the care provided within.”

The renovations have created a modern, welcoming space for patients and staff, including a complete lab redesign that improves workflow. For the Munis, the impact goes far beyond aesthetics. “We don’t feel this is a donation or a gift—it’s a family contribution,” says Indu. “We want to set an example of how community members can come together to support this important work.”

Through their generosity, the Muni family is honoring the past and investing in the future to ensure that Winchester Hospital continues to provide compassionate care for generations to come. Philanthropy is essential to supporting capital projects like the modernization of the Muni Family Medical Center. Gifts that support the investment in facilities allow Winchester Hospital to continue to build for the future and adapt to the evolving needs of the community.
