As a nurse practitioner at Winchester Hospital who specializes in hematology and oncology, Chelsea Jenkins, FNP, understands the importance of the Lahey Cancer Institute 5K Walk & Run better than most. The event is an important source of support for the Lahey Cancer Institute, enabling clinicians like Jenkins to provide lifesaving, world-class cancer care and conduct leading-edge research.

Being able to provide compassionate, patient-centered cancer care in a community setting and connecting with patients and families on a personal level is what drew Jenkins to practice at Winchester Hospital. “The event gives us an opportunity to honor cancer patients and survivors,” says Jenkins. “It’s a great opportunity to unite people around a common cause and create a positive sense of hope and community.”

The 5K benefits patients across the Lahey Cancer Institute, including those who receive care at Addison Gilbert Hospital, Beverly Hospital, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, Lahey Medical Center, Peabody, and Winchester Hospital. Across these communities, delivering personalized care is a top priority for the institute. “When patients come to Winchester Hospital to receive cancer treatment, they don’t feel like a number—the care is very individualized and family-oriented,” says Jenkins. “Patients get to know their care team and build a level of trust that helps allay fears and improve the experience. We’re always available to address their physical and emotional needs.”
