About the Evening’s Participants
Alice Hoffman is the author of more than thirty works of fiction, including Magic Lessons: The Prequel to Practical Magic, The World That We Knew, The Rules of Magic, The Marriage of Opposites, Practical Magic, The Book of Magic, The Red Garden, the Oprah’s Book Club selection Here on Earth, The Museum of Extraordinary Things, and The Dovekeepers. She lives near Boston.
Allegra Goodman’s novels include Sam (a Read With Jenna Book Club selection), The Chalk Artist (winner of the Massachusetts Book Award), Intuition, The Cookbook Collector, Paradise Park, and Kaaterskill Falls (a National Book Award finalist). Her fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, Commentary, and Ploughshares and has been anthologized in The O. Henry Awards and Best American Short Stories.
She has written two collections of short stories, The Family Markowitz and Total Immersion, and a novel for younger readers, The Other Side of the Island. Her essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and The American Scholar. Raised in Honolulu, Goodman studied English and philosophy at Harvard and received a PhD in English literature from Stanford. She is the recipient of a Whiting Writer’s Award, the Salon Award for Fiction, and a fellowship from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. She lives with her family in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she is writing a new novel.
Lois Lowry is a mother and grandmother and has worked as a photojournalist as well as a writer of fiction. Born in Hawaii, she grew up in Japan, Pennsylvania, and New York and attended Brown University and the University of Southern Maine. Currently she divides her time between an 18th century farmhouse in Maine and the west coast of Florida.
Lowry is twice the recipient of the Newbery Medal, given each year for the most distinguished contribution to children’s literature by an American author. Her 50+ books have been translated into more than thirty languages; several have been adapted for film and stage; and one, The Giver, has become an opera.
Hilarie Burton Morgan has built a dynamic career as an actress, businesswoman, author, and producer. Most notably, she established a loyal fan base for her role as Peyton Sawyer on the hit CW series One Tree Hill, which ran for six seasons. In June 2021, Burton reunited with her co-stars Sophia Bush and Bethany Joy Lenz to launch Drama Queens, a podcast for iHeartRadio.
Burton is also the author of The New York Times best-selling books The Rural Diaries and Grimoire Girl: A Memoir of Magic and Mischief. Her most recent memoir shares how she’s creating an inheritance of mischief and magic that will outlive her and connects us to the enchantment that exists inside us all.
Tom Perrotta is the bestselling author of ten works of fiction, including Election and Little Children, both of which were made into Oscar-nominated films, and The Leftovers and Mrs. Fletcher, which were adapted into critically acclaimed HBO series. His other books include Bad Haircut, The Wishbones, Joe College, The Abstinence Teacher, Nine Inches, and his newest, Tracy Flick Can’t Win. His work has been translated into many languages. Perrotta grew up in New Jersey and lives outside of Boston.
Imani Perry is the Henry A. Morss, Jr. and Elisabeth W. Morss Professor of Studies of Women, Gender and Sexuality and of African and African American Studies and the Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at Harvard Radcliffe Institute. She is a 2023 MacArthur Foundation fellow and the author of eight books, most recently the 2022 National Book Award winner for Nonfiction: South to America: A Journey Below the Mason Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation.
Hank Phillippi Ryan is the USA Today bestselling author of 15 psychological thrillers. She has won the genre’s most prestigious awards: five Agathas, five Anthonys, and the coveted Mary Higgins Clark Award. Ryan is also an investigative reporter for Boston’s WHDH-TV and has won 37 Emmy Awards. Her newest book is the page-turning standalone One Wrong Word, a twisty non-stop story of gaslighting, manipulation, and murder. She is the host of Crime Time on A Mighty Blaze, and co-host of The Back Room and First Chapter Fun. She lives in Boston.
About the Emcee
Joyce Kulhawik, best known as the Emmy Award-winning Arts & Entertainment Critic for WBZ-TV (CBS News Boston) (1981-2008), was the first arts reporter/critic in the U.S. to appear every weeknight as part of a local television news team and gave journalistic stature to arts reporting, greatly enhancing her station’s commitment to community service.
Joyce is currently President of the Boston Theater Critics Association, member of the Boston Society of Film Critics, Boston Online Film Critics Association, and appears on Boston’s NPR station’s (GBH radio 89.7) The Culture Show weekdays at 2 p.m.
