Lahey Hospital & Medical Center has deep roots as a regional leader in providing compassionate, personalized cancer care to patients from across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. This longstanding legacy is further bolstered as part of the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) system, which ushers in an opportunity to serve more individuals across the region in need of highly specialized radiation oncology services. Plans are currently underway to create an expanded and transformed radiation oncology clinic with additional space designed to support more patients and continually improve their experiences and outcomes. This endeavor was jumpstarted by three incredible gifts totaling more than $1.35 million—one from an anonymous donor, another from longtime friends and benefactors of the hospital, the Gilroy Family, and a third from retired Lahey anesthesiologist Sara Davies, MD.  

Building upon this legacy of excellence in radiation oncology is critical to Lahey’s continued growth—and philanthropy is vital to the project’s success. Currently, the experts in the Division of Radiation Oncology in the Sophia Gordon Cancer Center provide more than 9,000 state-of-the-art radiation treatments each year to give patients a chance at the best possible outcome. “Supporting the top philanthropic priority at Lahey was an easy decision,” says Scott Gilroy, whose family members are longtime supporters of the hospital who understand the essential nature of philanthropy in large-scale capital projects such as this one. “It is a unique and special institution which my family has benefitted from for so many years. Supporting its growth will bring this experience to others and their families.”  

Philanthropy like the Gilroy family’s allows care teams to reach new heights with the best tools and most up-to-date spaces at their disposal. “We are so fortunate to have a staff dedicated to saving lives and providing care to anyone who needs us,” says Angela Tambini, MBA, Executive Director of Cancer and Infusion Services. “The opportunity for growth is exciting, as we are already able to provide such depth and breadth of services. Expansion and enhancement will enable us to serve more people, more efficiently than ever before.” This is an incredible opportunity to enhance Lahey’s ability to provide state-of-the-art cancer care in the communities the hospital serves. The clinic will contain new, state-of-the-art technology, four additional exam rooms, a dedicated space for caregivers to work and recharge, a beautiful rock garden, and more. These improvements will allow for enhanced privacy for patients and families, a more gracious healing environment with natural light, and expanded access for more patients.  

These three incredible gifts are leading the way on the path to realizing a new radiation oncology clinic.
