Note from Kevin

Dear BIDMC Board Member,

As we transition from winter to spring, I want to express how grateful I am for the Medical Center’s philanthropic progress. I remain in awe of your generosity, expertise, and leadership as we continue to grow.

I am pleased to share an update on our fundraising efforts for the second quarter of Fiscal Year 2023. The BIDMC team has raised $36 million as of March 31, 2023. As always, we are making strides in our Where Extraordinary Lives Campaign, with more than $613 million raised through the second quarter.

The Klarman Building at BIDMC opened its doors on April 1 to provide patients a sophisticated, state-of-the-art environment for healing. This historic accomplishment is possible thanks in large part to philanthropy—and to so many of our dedicated board members. Our team hosted a Grand Opening Celebration to share this space with more than 300 attendees. Please visit our Klarman Building Celebration page to see event highlights and videos. In addition, I would like to share new photos of the building, taken just days ago.

We at BIDMC are ever-committed to bolstering efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). I encourage you to review the latest Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) DEI report, just released in February 2023. This issue’s Focus on Diversity feature is about the Interpreter Services Department, which facilitates nearly 300,000 patient interactions annually. Interpreters provide support in more than 70 languages so that everyone can receive the care they deserve, regardless of the languages they speak. I also invite you to read this issue’s Leadership Spotlight feature, highlighting Kamal Khabbaz, MD, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at BIDMC.

We are saddened by the passing of Foster Aborn. Foster was a longstanding, dedicated member of our community and was a Trustee Emeritus. He will be greatly missed, and I offer my deepest condolences to his family.

Thank you all for your leadership and continuous support. I look forward to the many exciting things that are to come at BIDMC, so that the Medical Center can continue to deliver the most advanced, compassionate, and high-quality care to the patients and communities we serve.

Sincerely,

Kevin McAteer
