Dear BIDMC Board Member,
I hope you having a wonderful fall. I am pleased to share this latest edition of the Board eUpdate, which highlights exciting momentum across Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
At BIDMC, we take pride in fostering a culture where faculty and staff thrive—a culture that sustains our clinical and academic excellence and attracts truly outstanding talent as we advance the Dana-Farber Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Collaboration. We have recruited more than 150 physicians and scientists toward our goal of 200 faculty members who will join teams across the medical center to support a new model of comprehensive, coordinated cancer care as well as care in other specialties. Earlier this month, we were delighted to welcome Seth Karp, MD, as Chair of the Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Department of Surgery, and Gavin Dunn, MD, PhD, as Chair of the new Department of Neurosurgery. You can read more about them here.
Philanthropy continues to be vital in recruiting the best candidates as we compete for the nation’s brightest scientific and clinical talent. If you want to learn more about how you can support this effort, please let me know. I would be happy to tell you more.
It is my pleasure to report that we reached our $95 million fundraising goal for fiscal year 2026, ending on September 30, with $95.4 million raised. That means continued impact across clinical care, research, medical education, and talent recruitment. It also means significant progress in our Where Extraordinary Lives campaign, which now stands at $960.1 million raised to date.
I am deeply grateful for your continued generosity and engagement, including through your contributions to the Board Annual Fund. This past year, we raised $1.76 million toward our $1.75 million goal. Thank you! Your support strengthens our fundraising efforts while sending a powerful message of confidence in our mission to patients, families, donors, and colleagues throughout the institution.
We were proud to see BIDMC recently recognized nationally for excellence across multiple specialties. In the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, BIDMC earned distinction among the nation’s best, placing in the top 50 hospitals nationwide in eight specialties. I particularly want to call out our impressive #4 ranking in Obstetrics & Gynecology, which reflects our commitment to world-class care and research in women’s health. In addition, Diabetes & Endocrinology ranked #9, reflecting the exceptional strength of our Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism and our longstanding partnership with Joslin Diabetes Center.
One of the ways you can continue to get a closer look at what makes extraordinary care, research, and education possible at BIDMC is by joining one or more of our Community Grand Rounds. I hope you’re able to join one in the coming months. You can view the full schedule here.
I look forward to seeing you this coming week, on Wednesday, October 21, at the Annual Meeting of the Boards. If you haven’t already let us know, you can RSVP here. In the meantime, thank you for your continued partnership, counsel, and commitment to BIDMC. The progress we are making together would not be possible without your leadership.
Sincerely,
Kevin McAteer
